TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A total of 183 Indonesian pilgrims are declared dead as of June 9, 2025, or on day 40 of this year's hajj season. According to the head of the Hajj Health Center of the Ministry of Health, Liliek Marhaendro Susilo, these pilgrims will be buried in Saudi Arabia.
Liliek explained that the system to handle the pilgrims who have passed away remains the same as in previous years. Last year, the deceased pilgrims were buried in various regions in Saudi Arabia, such as Mecca and Medina, in accordance with the local government's advice and the family's consent.
Liliek added that pilgrims who remain ill during the return period after hajj will receive treatment before returning to Indonesia, based on a doctor's recommendation.
"If their respective group has already returned to the homeland, the pilgrim will join the next group," Liliek said when contacted on Tuesday, June 10, 2025. The number of Hajj pilgrims receiving treatment in local hospitals is 214 people.
The Saudi Arabian Hajj Organizer Committee (PPIH) noted fewer numbers of hajj pilgrims passing away during the religious procession this year. In 2024, a total of 190 Indonesian Hajj pilgrims were recorded to have passed away during the fifth week of the Hajj.
Member of the House's Hajj Monitoring Team, Selly Andriany Gantina, highlighted health issues in the 2025 Hajj implementation. According to her, quite a few Indonesian Hajj pilgrims passed away due to being separated from their groups.
"When husbands and wives or companions and elderly pilgrims are separated, there will be emotional and mental disturbances," she said when contacted on Monday, June 9, 2025.
She observed that pilgrims who are separated from their groups experience mental issues, causing their physical condition to weaken. This is because there are millions of people doing activities in the Holy Land during hajj.
She also raised concerns about the number of younger pilgrims who passed away due to chronic illnesses, though she stopped short of mentioning the exact number.
"Which means, from the health perspective, there are still gaps in the Hajj implementation. It still allows people with serious illnesses to proceed," she said.
