Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Makes First Public Appearance Since Iran-Israel War

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, made a public appearance on Saturday, July 5, 2025. He attended a mourning ceremony on the night of Asyura, marking his first public appearance since the 12-day war with Israel began.

The Iranian Government television showed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei waving to the cheering and chanting crowd as he entered a mosque near his residence in Tehran. He did not give a speech at the event.

The 86-year-old Khamenei spent his time during the war with Israel in a bunker. Threats to his life increased, and even Israeli leaders openly expressed their desire to kill Iran's supreme leader.

The Iran-Israel war began on June 13, after Israel attacked Iran's nuclear facilities. Air strikes were exchanged for 12 days. The United States became involved by bombing three major nuclear sites in Iran. The two countries later agreed to a ceasefire, initiated by the U.S., which has held until now.

On June 26, shortly after the ceasefire began, Khamenei made his first public statement. In a pre-recorded statement, he said that Tehran had 'slapped America in the face' by attacking a U.S. air base in Qatar, and warned against further attacks by the U.S. or Israel on Iran.

U.S. President Donald Trump immediately reacted on his social media account. 'Look, you're a great man of faith. A highly respected man in your country. You have to tell the truth. You got whacked, big-time.'

Iran has acknowledged the deaths of over 900 people in the war, along with thousands of injuries. Iran also confirmed serious damage to its nuclear facilities and has denied access to these facilities for UN nuclear inspectors.
