TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has offered support to President Prabowo Subianto for Indonesia’s free nutritious meal program. The offer was conveyed during a joint statement at the Planalto Palace in Brasília on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.
President Prabowo met with Lula in a bilateral meeting following his participation in the BRICS Summit held in Rio de Janeiro.
Lula stated that the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, which Brazil launched at the G20 Summit in 2024, is prepared to assist Indonesia in implementing its meal program. He also shared Brazil’s experience with the National School Feeding Program (PNAE), calling it a global benchmark in school meal initiatives. His remarks were quoted from the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube channel.
According to Lula, Brazil and Indonesia hold similar views on addressing hunger, poverty, and climate change. He acknowledged that Indonesia’s free nutritious meal program, launched earlier this year, is the world’s largest, with a target of reaching 83 million beneficiaries by 2029.
The PNAE is Brazil’s oldest and most extensive school feeding initiative, providing meals to millions of public school students. As noted on the website of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, Brazil aims to eliminate hunger and ensure proper nutrition for all children in the country by 2030.
During the same event, President Prabowo expressed appreciation for Brazil’s food security policies and praised the PNAE. He stated that Indonesia is open to adopting the concept behind Brazil’s program as a reference for its own initiative.
"We are currently implementing an ambitious program to provide free nutritious meals for children and pregnant women in Indonesia," said Prabowo. "And we are on track to achieve 82.9 million meals per day by December 2025."
Following his meeting with Lula, President Prabowo departed Brazil on Wednesday, July 9, 2025. The Garuda Indonesia-1 aircraft carrying the president and a small entourage took off from Brasília Air Base at 05:20 PM local time.
During his visit, President Prabowo attended the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro on July 6 and 7. The summit was followed by a state visit to the capital. After Brazil, he is scheduled to travel to France to take part in the Bastille Day commemoration on July 14, 2025.
