BYD Electric Car Emits Smoke and Explodes in Jakarta Garage

4 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta firefighters extinguished a smoking BYD Seal electric car parked in a garage. Syarifudin, Head of the Operations Section of the West Jakarta Fire and Rescue Sub-agency, claimed that the car had been idle for three days.

When the owner attempted to turn it on on Tuesday morning, May 13, 2025, the Chinese-made electric car suddenly started to smoke, and an explosion was heard. "The owner then reported this to the firefighters by calling the Kembangan Sector, and officers immediately responded," said Syarifudin on Tuesday, May 13, 2025.

Syarifudin explained that the car, with the license plate number B 510 JMT, was parked in the garage of a house located on Jalan Katalia Number 10, in the North Kota Bambu Village, Palmerah District, West Jakarta. The car owner reported the incident at 04:18 Jakarta time, and 30 firefighters with the help of six fire engines quickly arrived at the scene.

The firefighters who arrived prevented the fire from spreading by spraying water on the car, which had been covered with a blanket. They then pushed the car out of the garage. This process was completed by 07:30 Jakarta time.

Syarifudin confirmed that no one was injured or killed in the incident. The amount of damage caused by the smoking BYD car is still being determined.

Syarifudin suspects that the smoke from the car came from the battery's electrical system when it was turned on. However, the exact cause is still being investigated. "Maybe a mechanic will examine it later," he said.
