TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An incident that injured dozens of people occurred amidst Liverpool's Premier League victory parade on Monday, May 27, 2025. A car crashed into a crowd of supporters at the city center at Water Street.
According to Antara, the incident occurred around 6:00 p.m. local time, shortly after the bus carrying the players and club officials passed through. The perpetrator was a 53-year-old white British man from Liverpool. He was immediately arrested by Merseyside police at the scene.
How Did it Happen?
According to several eyewitnesses and local media reports, a car was 'speeding up' from Dale Street towards Strand, a few minutes after the Liverpool FC entourage had passed. In a road filled with thousands of people, the car suddenly swerved onto the sidewalk and ploughed into the crowd.
Harry Rashid, one of the eyewitnesses interviewed by Dailypost, said that the van was speeding and "rammed into all the people" nearby. Meanwhile, another eyewitness, Mike Maddra, described that "the car turned left, mounted pavement, come towards us and runs towards the buildings."
In a circulating video, it shows several people being thrown off when they were hit by the speeding car.
People panicked and ran. Some tried to stop the driver until the police arrived and restrained the man. Several emergency vehicles such as ambulances, fire trucks, and air ambulances were deployed to the scene to evacuate the victims.
How Many People Were Injured?
Based on official data from the police and emergency services, the total number of victims amounted to 47, with 27 being treated at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, including two who were severely injured. One of the two severely injured was a child. The other 20 individuals received initial treatment at the scene.
Four victims, including a child, were trapped under the van, and firefighters had to lift the vehicle to free them.
Was the Attack Related to Terrorism?
Merseyside Police has clarified that the incident was not related to terrorism. In a press conference, Assistant Chief Police Jenny Sims stated that the perpetrator was a lone individual and they were not seeking additional suspects. “What I can tell you is that we believe this to be an isolated incident," Sims said, as quoted from Dailypost. “The incident is not being treated as terrorism.”
The police also urged residents not to speculate or spread misinformation regarding the incident.
According to eyewitnesses, the perpetrator seemed frustrated because of the traffic jam caused by the parade and intentionally drove his vehicle towards the crowd.
What Did Liverpool FC Say?
Liverpool FC immediately issued an official statement following the incident. The club expressed condolences and prayers for all the victims and their families.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident," the official statement read.
"We will continue to offer our full support to the emergency services and local authorities who are dealing with this incident."
