Ceasefire Proposal Sparks Mixed Reactions from Iran and Israel

9 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran and Israel have officially declared a ceasefire after 12 days of conflict. On the morning of Tuesday, June 24, 2025, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel was prepared to halt hostilities and accept the peace proposal put forward by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Trump revealed the ceasefire agreement via his social media platform, writing, "The ceasefire is now in effect. Please do not violate it!" According to Al Jazeera, Israel agreed to the terms on the condition that Iran would also uphold the agreement.

Iran later confirmed the ceasefire through a statement broadcast on its national television. Al Jazeera reported that conditions in Tehran had returned to calm, with no signs of further airstrikes.

Iranian officials also welcomed Trump’s diplomatic efforts, expressing optimism that the ceasefire would create greater space for dialogue and deliver tangible benefits.

Mutual Accusations Follow

Despite the agreement, tensions resurfaced when Israel launched another strike on Iranian territory. CNN reported an explosion in northern Tehran, with Israeli authorities accusing Iran of firing two ballistic missiles into Israel just three hours after the ceasefire was announced.

Iran strongly denied the allegations. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused Israel of breaking the ceasefire by continuing attacks for an hour and a half after the truce took effect. He insisted that Iran would only retaliate if it were attacked first.

Trump himself expressed disappointment over Israel’s actions. While acknowledging that Iran had violated the agreement, he criticized Israel for escalating the situation further.

"So I’m not happy with them. I’m not happy with Iran either. But I’m really unhappy if Israel is going out this morning," Trump told reporters on Tuesday before departing for the NATO summit in the Netherlands, as quoted by Al Jazeera.

Trump emphasized the importance of de-escalation, particularly from Israel. He expressed frustration that Israel had continued its bombing campaign, stating his disappointment that the country had disregarded the coordinated diplomatic efforts with Qatar, especially after Iran had damaged a U.S. military base.
