TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Cristiano Ronaldo has extended his contract with Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr. Despite being one of the oldest players in the league, he said his ambition continues to grow. “Ambition, I feel, has no end,” said the 40-year-old Ronaldo, as quoted by Record and cited by ESPN.
The Portugal national team captain has signed a two-year deal, keeping him in the Saudi Pro League until June 2027. “Consistency, commitment, and collective work will make us better. And that is the task I am undertaking here. We are starting a new phase,” he said.
Ronaldo’s previous contract was due to expire on June 30. He joined Al Nassr in 2022 after parting ways with Manchester United, becoming the world’s highest-paid athlete. According to Forbes, he has topped the earnings list for the past three years.
Since arriving at Al Nassr, Ronaldo has scored 93 goals in 105 matches but has yet to win a major trophy. His only title with the club so far is the Arab Club Champions Cup, secured in 2023.
Al Nassr finished as runners-up in the 2022–2023 and 2023–2024 Saudi Pro League seasons and ended last season in third place.
However, Ronaldo did lift his third international title with Portugal earlier this June, scoring in the UEFA Nations League final against Spain. “I have many titles with clubs, but none are better than winning for Portugal,” said Ronaldo, tears in his eyes as he lifted the trophy.
The new contract allows the five-time Ballon d’Or winner to continue pursuing 1,000 career goals. He has netted 794 goals at the club level and 138 for Portugal, bringing his total to 932.
Ronaldo declined an offer to play in the FIFA Club World Cup with another club and chose to remain focused on the upcoming season with Al Nassr. He will begin the new campaign under a new coach following the club’s announcement of Stefano Pioli’s departure after less than a year in charge.
