TEMPO.CO, Jakarta A video showing a building in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, engulfed in flames, circulated on X [archive], Facebook, and Instagram on March 14, 2026. Smoke could be seen rising between the buildings surrounding Masjid al-Haram and the Zamzam Tower.

The uploader claimed that the fires affected a shawarma restaurant and the Mira Ajyad Hotel. According to Iranian intelligence, the fires were part of an Israeli “false flag” operation against the world's largest places of worship. A false flag operation involves a covert attack followed by the scapegoating of another party.

As of now, the 21-minute video has been viewed over 314,000 times, liked by more than 2,000 people, and shared by over 500 accounts. But is it true that the fire in the Masjid al-Haram area was caused by the Iran-Israel conflict?

FACT CHECK

Tempo verified the content through visual analysis, digital maps, and comparison with credible sources. The results showed that a fire had indeed occurred at the Mira Ajyad Hotel in Mecca. However, the fire was not related to the ongoing war between the United States, Israel, and Iran.

Identifying the Location and Cause of the Fire

Through a reverse image search, Tempo identified the location of the fire as the Mira Ajyad Hotel in Mecca on March 12, 2026. According to The Islamic Information, local authorities stated that the fire originated in a pile of trash in an empty lot near the hotel.

The abundance of flammable materials, including construction waste and wood, caused the fire to rapidly spread to the surrounding area, including an adjacent restaurant. Several credible media outlets, including Indonesian news outlets Liputan6 and Okezone, as well as Malaysian news outlets Bernama and Free Malaysia Today, reported on the incident.

Tempo then used Google Earth digital maps to verify the location of the fire. The cityscape in the circulating video resembled that of King Abdul Aziz Street.

Clues to the location can be identified by streetlight poles and brown buildings with minimal windows. The Zamzam Tower can also be seen in the distance.

According to Google Maps, the Mira Ajyad Hotel is only about 500 meters from the Zamzam Tower.

The Origin of the Term False Flag Operation

According to the BBC, the term "false flag operation" originally referred to a tactic used by 16th-century pirates. These pirates would deliberately fly the flags of friendly nations to deceive merchant ships and allow themselves to dock.

Tempo first came across the claim about the false flag operation in an article on AlMayadeen.net through a Google search. The article, titled "Exclusive: Source warns of Israeli false flag operations ahead," was published on March 8, 2026.

Al Mayadeen cited a warning from an Iranian Intelligence Ministry official on March 7, reported by the Iranian news agency, Tasnim, about a possible Israeli false flag operation to attack the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied Jerusalem using drones or missiles. The operation was intended to incite Arab and Muslim public opinion against Iran.

However, a search of the official Tasnim website yielded no news reports about the statement made by the Iranian intelligence official. Similar results were found when checking various other credible international media sites.

News about Iran's alleged false flag operation against Israel was actually related to the attack on Saudi Arabia's Aramco oil facilities on March 2, 2026. According to an informant who spoke with Tasnim, Israel's plan was intended to divert the attention of neighboring countries from attacks on civilian sites in Iran.

Iran recently accused Israel of orchestrating a false flag operation. According to Anadolu, Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, said that he had received information about alleged Israeli plans to carry out an attack similar to 9/11 and blamed Iran for it.

CONCLUSION

According to Tempo's investigation, the claim that the Masjid al-Haram fire was caused by a false flag operation in the Iran-Israel war is misleading. The fire at the Mira Ajyad Hotel was indeed caused by trash, not by the war between Iran and the United States and Israel.
