Garuda Indonesia to Raise Airfares Following Fuel Surcharge Hike

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Airfares for Garuda Indonesia will be raised accordingly following the fuel surcharge hike, said President Director of PT Garuda Indonesia, Glenny Kairupan, adding that the state carrier will keep operating flights. 

Glenny said in a written statement on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, that "Garuda Indonesia will adjust ticket prices proportionally and measurably while still prioritizing the cautionary principle, transparency, and law compliance."

Last Monday, the Indonesian government increased the fuel surcharge to 38 percent for jet and propeller aircraft through Minister of Transportation Decree No. KM 83 of 2026.

Previously, the maximum fuel surcharge was 10 percent for jets and 25 percent for propellers. Airlines are also allowed to raise fares by a maximum of 9-13 percent.

These measures are taken following the rise in global crude oil prices triggered by the war between the United States-Israel and Iran.

The government has also waived the import duties on aircraft spare parts due to adjusted component prices. Additionally, Indonesia also covers the 11 percent Value Added Tax (VAT) on plane tickets.

"This policy serves as a strategic measure to maintain the balance between the airline's operational sustainability and the accessibility of aviation services for the public, and support the stability of the national aviation industry ecosystem," said Glenny.

Garuda Indonesia is preparing mitigation measures through an optimization assessment of flight frequencies and schedules across several routes, to maintain capacity productivity and operational sustainability.

Going forward, Garuda Indonesia will continue to monitor the geopolitical developments and global aviation industry dynamics. Glenny said the airline will ensure that every adjustment is made adaptively to maintain the balance between business sustainability and service accessibility across all walks of life.
