Grab, Gojek, and Maxim Online Taxi Drivers Will Shut Down Apps on May 20

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Transport Workers Union (SPAI) along with online motorcycle (ojol) drivers, online taxis, and couriers will conduct a demonstration on Tuesday, May 20, 2025. SPAI also calls for a mass 'off bid' action or turning off the application during the demonstration. "This is a coalition action of labor unions and communities," said SPAI Chair Lily Pujiati when contacted on Sunday, May 18, 2025.

The action will take place in the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation area. Lily said the demonstration would be joined by about 1,000 people. The demonstration participants are from communities in several areas such as Jakarta, Tangerang, and Yogyakarta. Additionally, there are partner drivers of transportation services and online deliveries such as Gojek, Grab, Maxim, Shopee, Lalamove, and Borzo.

They will demand better welfare for the drivers, including reducing the platform cut to 10 percent and improving existing regulations. Lily said the current working conditions of ojol drivers are far from decent, including platform cuts reaching 70 percent.

Lily mentioned that drivers only receive a fee of Rp 5,200 for delivering food. Meanwhile, customers pay the platform Rp 18,000. "From this, it is clear that the platform profits by squeezing the sweat of ojol drivers," she said.

Therefore, SPAI supports the demand for a 10 percent cut or even its removal. SPAI also asks platforms to provide clarity regarding passengers, goods, and food that is fair and equal. "Not only that, we also support the elimination of discriminatory schemes or programs that prioritize orders for some ojol drivers who participate in these schemes, thus there is no equal working rights for other ojol drivers," said Lily.

Discriminatory priority schemes, according to Lily, include GrabBike Hemat; slot schemes, aceng (argo goceng) in Gojek; hub scheme in ShopeeFood; priority schemes in Maxim, Lalamove, InDrive, Deliveree, Borzo, and others. Hence, SPAI also urges the Ministry of Manpower to create legal protection for ojol drivers. "So that platform companies do not act arbitrarily towards their drivers," she said.
