Hamas Welcomes Hague Group Agreement to Sanction Israel over Gaza Genocide

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Palestinian resistance group, Hamas, on Saturday welcomed the historic international agreement reached in the capital of Colombia, Bogota, to impose sanctions on Israel over the ongoing genocide in the Gaza Strip.

The agreement was signed on July 16 in an emergency meeting in Bogota, as reported by Anadolu, attended by more than 20 countries. Nations gathered to formulate legal and diplomatic responses to what they described as Israel's escalating violations in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

In its statement, Hamas stated that the agreement includes concrete steps, including the cessation of arms transfers to Israel, a review of bilateral agreements, and the promotion of international investigations into alleged war crimes.

Hamas viewed the agreement as a bold step against the blockade and the cruelties experienced by the Palestinian residents in Gaza.

“This is a living expression of global outrage at a time when the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached unbearable levels due to massacres, mass starvation, and the systematic denial of basic necessities,” the group said.

Hamas called on the broader international community to seize this momentum and collectively work to isolate the occupation, expose its crimes, and enforce further sanctions to stop the genocide and protect innocent civilians.

The meeting in Bogota was organized by The Hague Group, a legal coalition consisting of eight countries—Colombia, South Africa, Bolivia, Cuba, Honduras, Malaysia, Namibia, and Senegal—formed earlier this year in the Netherlands to demand Israel's accountability under international law.

The summit was also attended by delegations from Turkey, Brazil, Portugal, Algeria, Lebanon, Oman, Uruguay, Bangladesh, Chile, Djibouti, Indonesia, Nicaragua, as well as Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, along with several Palestinian representatives.

According to Anadolu's reporters present at the meeting, the agreement requires participating countries to implement a series of coordinated measures, especially a total ban on the export or transfer of weapons, ammunition, military fuel, and dual-use technology to Israel.

The agreement also includes restrictions on ships suspected of carrying military equipment to Israel, including a ban on entering national ports or access to logistical services.

Despite numerous calls for a ceasefire, the Israeli military has continued its brutal attacks in Gaza since October 7, 2023, which have claimed the lives of nearly 59,000 Palestinian civilians, most of them women and children.

The relentless bombing has devastated the Gaza region and caused an ongoing food crisis and the spread of various diseases.

Last November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defense chief Yoav Gallant on allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide lawsuit at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its aggression in the region.
