House Speaker: Talks with Cambodia's Hun Sen Concern ASEAN Unity, Bilateral Ties

6 days ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - House Speaker Puan Maharani said there were no distinct talks on Indonesian migrant workers with the president of the Cambodian Senate, Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, at the parliament building this morning, May 7, 2025.

Puan explained that the Cambodian leader shared updates on the developments in his country, as well as discussing the cooperation between Indonesia and Cambodia.

"There were no specific discussions about Indonesian migrant workers earlier, as we conversed about general matters," said Puan at the Senayan Parliament complex, Jakarta, on Wednesday, May 7.

The main focus of their discussion, the chairperson of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) continued, was on parliamentary support for government policies. They both agreed that the government cannot function alone without legislative support.

Furthermore, Puan mentioned that Hun Sen also spoke about the unity among Southeast Asian countries, considering the less-than-conducive global status quo. "We hope for stronger and better ASEAN solidarity to avoid direct impact from global turmoil," she said.

The DPR Speaker also claimed that Hun Sen hopes for a closer and enhanced relationship between Indonesia and Cambodia.

Puan previously said that her talks with Hun Sen would  would address the protection of Indonesian migrant workers in Cambodia. Based on the notes of the Indonesian Embassy in Cambodia, the number of Indonesian deaths in that country has increased.

"This should serve as a reminder of how important it is to protect Indonesian citizens, especially Indonesian migrant workers," said Puan on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, as quoted from an official statement.

The Indonesian Embassy in Cambodia recorded a significant rise in problematic cases of Indonesian citizens, rising by 60 times in the past 5 years, from 2020 to 2024. The surge in cases can be seen from 56 cases in 2020 to 3,310 cases in 2024. According to the Indonesian Embassy in Cambodia, around 75 percent of these cases are related to Indonesian citizens who are trapped in online scams or cyber fraud.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian Embassy in Cambodia has reportedly handled 92 cases of Indonesian citizen deaths in 2024. This figure represents a 24.3 percent increase from 2023. Puan argued that this incident is no longer a domestic issue, but has been categorized as a regional emergency.
