TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Human hearing has a limited capacity to respond to sound waves, frequency, and intensity. Maintaining ear health is an important part of maintaining hearing quality and daily life. Recently, the use of sound reinforcement has been under scrutiny due to numerous public complaints that excessive volume can damage hearing.
Currently, the East Java government is still drafting standard regulations regarding the use of sound horeg. Now, what is a sound horeg? It is a phrase used to describe extremely loud mobile sound systems. These setups often feature towering stacks of handcrafted speakers, thunderous subwoofers, and music played long into the night. They are usually used in religious processions, secular celebrations, street parades, and weddings.
Cholil Nafis, Chairperson of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Center for Da'wah and Brotherhood, stated that sound reinforcement is prohibited because it causes hearing loss and even disturbs the health of the sick. The East Java MUI issued Fatwa Number 1 of 2025 concerning the use of sound reinforcement on July 9, 2025.
Here are some tips to maintain your ear health:
1. Early Detection and Lifestyle
Hearing loss should be recognized early so that appropriate and prompt treatment can be administered. Early detection allows for medical or rehabilitation measures before the disorder worsens, according to a paper in Auxilium: Journal of Health Service.
Regular ear examinations are crucial to ensure the ear canal is free of infection. This step allows for early detection of hearing loss so that treatment can be initiated more quickly.
Maintaining ear health can be supported by adopting a healthy lifestyle, such as consuming a balanced diet rich in vitamins C and E. Proper nutrition helps maintain hearing function and the body's resistance to infection. Thorough hygiene is also important to prevent ear canal disorders.
Education on proper ear care needs to be continuously provided to all levels of society. Accurate knowledge will help foster awareness and healthy lifestyle habits in maintaining hygiene and hearing function.
2. Avoiding Loud Noises
Continuous exposure to loud noises can permanently damage hearing cells and cause hearing loss. It is recommended to use ear protection devices such as earplugs or sound absorbers. This is especially important when working in environments or activities with high noise levels, according to a paper in Sewagati: Indonesian Community Service Journal.
3. Cleaning Your Ears
Incorrect use of cotton swabs can push earwax (cerumen) deeper into the ear canal and risk damaging the eardrum. If necessary, ear cleaning should be performed by a qualified medical professional. According to a paper in the Journal of Community Service, indiscriminate ear cleaning has been shown to be a common cause of hearing loss and tympanic membrane damage.
The human ear has a natural cleaning mechanism through the production of earwax (cerumen). This wax protects the ear canal from dust and bacteria. Excessive ear cleaning can disrupt this natural protective process. Maintaining a balanced earwax production is crucial to prevent blockages or infections that can lead to hearing loss.
