Indonesia Accelerates Disaster Rehabilitation in Sumatra

6 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Pratikno stated that the Indonesian government is finalizing its master plan for rehabilitation and reconstruction after the disaster in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. The finalization will be coordinated by the Ministry of National Development Planning/National Development Planning Agency. "This will serve as a reference for the implementation of programs and ensure that the post-disaster recovery process is more focused and integrated," he said in an official statement from the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture on Tuesday, April 7, 2025.

Pratikno explained that the finalization is a follow-up to a meeting with several agencies at the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture office in Jakarta on Monday, April 6, 2026. He stated that accelerating the rehabilitation and reconstruction after the Sumatra disaster is the top priority. "By ensuring that the community's life can quickly return to normal through the resolution of various obstacles, both administratively and in the field," he said.

In his capacity as the Chair of the Task Force Steering Team, Pratikno invited the Chair of the Task Force Implementation Team and its staff to discuss various hindrances in the field and formulate acceleration measures. "We received a report from the Chair of the Task Force Implementation Team regarding the progress and issues that need immediate follow-up action," he said.

Several areas in Sumatra were hit by floods and landslides in early 2026, especially in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. The disaster was triggered by heavy rainfall and extreme weather. It resulted in flooded residential areas, blocked roads, and damaged public facilities, including bridges, schools, and healthcare services. Additionally, the community's economic activities were disrupted due to limited logistics distribution in several affected areas.

Pratikno said that the achievements in handling the situation so far have shown positive developments. However, faster, more coordinated steps are needed to ensure the affected communities feel the recovery. "The achievements of post-disaster recovery in the three provinces up to this point have been very good, but of course, we need to move on to the next stage," he said.

Pratikno stressed that the acceleration of rehabilitation and reconstruction must be carried out comprehensively. Not only in terms of infrastructure development, but also in the recovery of community life, including public services, education, healthcare, and the economy.

The government continues to anticipate emergency conditions due to ongoing disasters in several regions. It ensures that emergency response efforts run in parallel with the rehabilitation and reconstruction process.

He emphasized the importance of synergy among cross-ministerial agencies and local governments to ensure an optimal and impactful rehabilitation and reconstruction process for the affected communities.

Present at the meeting were Minister of Community Empowerment Muhaimin Iskandar, Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian, Minister of Public Works Dody Hanggodo, Head of National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) Suharyanto, as well as representatives from other relevant ministries and agencies.
