Iran's Parliament Approves Strait of Hormuz Strait Toll Plan

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A key committee in Iran’s parliament has approved a plan to impose transit tolls on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, according to local media reports on Tuesday.

The measure, approved by the parliament’s National Security Commission, includes a series of new regulations aimed at managing the strategic waterway, including financial provisions requiring ships to pay transit fees in Iran’s national currency. Local reports said the proposal is part of a broader plan to formalize Tehran’s control over the strait.

According to Iran’s Fars news agency, as cited by Anadolu, commission member Mojtaba Zarei said the draft legislation also includes restrictions on vessels linked to the United States and Israel from passing through the strait.

Additional provisions in the bill would also deny access to countries that have joined unilateral sanctions against Iran.

Although approved at the committee level, the proposal must still pass a full parliamentary vote before being reviewed by the Guardian Council and signed by the president in order to become law.

The move comes as tensions in the region continue to escalate following joint Israeli and U.S. strikes on Iran on Feb. 28, which, according to Iranian and regional reports, killed more than 1,340 people, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Iran later launched retaliatory drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and several Gulf states hosting U.S. military assets. The strikes caused casualties and damage to infrastructure, while also disrupting global markets and aviation routes.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints, handling roughly one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments in normal conditions. Since the conflict escalated, maritime traffic through the waterway has fallen sharply, adding pressure to global energy markets.
