Israel Bombs Gaza Hospital, Killing 34 Palestinians Amid Disputed Tunnel Claim

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Israeli military has reportedly provided misleading information about the existence of tunnels beneath the Gaza European Hospital in southern Gaza, which was struck twice within 24 hours, local media said on Wednesday.

According to Israeli newspaper Haaretz, which cited aerial image analysis released by the military, the tunnel “is located under the nearby school.” The report added that the tunnel “is not located within the hospital as the military claimed,” and emphasized, “There is no evidence to support the claim that the tunnel is under the medical facility.”

On Tuesday night, Israeli airstrikes hit the hospital and its surrounding area, killing 34 Palestinians and injuring dozens more, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health and Civil Defense.

In a joint statement, the Israeli military and internal security service Shin Bet claimed they had carried out “precision strikes” targeting Hamas operatives.

Israeli outlets, including public broadcaster KAN, reported that the strikes aimed to eliminate senior Al Qassam Brigade commander Mohammed Sinwar—the brother of Yahya Sinwar, the Hamas political leader who was killed by Israeli forces on October 16, 2024.

Hamas denounced the bombing of the Gaza European Hospital as a “new war crime.”

The Gaza Government Media Office stated on May 8 that 38 hospitals, 81 healthcare centers, and 164 medical facilities have been destroyed, burned, or rendered inoperable since the start of Israel’s military campaign.

The offensive, which began in October 2023, has killed more than 52,900 Palestinians, most of them women and children, according to Palestinian authorities.

In November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel is also facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over its actions in the enclave.
