TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Israeli military said on Monday, March 16, 2026, that its troops had begun limited ground operations against the Hezbollah group in southern Lebanon.
"In recent days, IDF troops from the 91st division have begun limited and targeted ground operations against key Hezbollah strongholds in southern Lebanon, aimed at enhancing the forward defense area," the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement.
The military said the operations were part of broader efforts to strengthen a forward defensive posture, including dismantling militant infrastructure and targeting Hezbollah fighters to reduce threats and improve security for residents of northern Israel.
"Prior to the troops' entry into the area, the IDF conducted strikes using both artillery and the Israeli Air Force against numerous terrorist targets in order to mitigate threats in the operational environment," the statement said.
Ground campaign comes after intensified air strikes
Israel renewed its aerial campaign against Hezbollah after the start of the US-Israeli war against Iran, which is a major backer of Hezbollah.
The conflict has triggered a humanitarian crisis in Lebanon, with some 830,000 people displaced, particularly from the country’s Shiite-majority south.
Israeli strikes have killed some 850 people in Lebanon since early March, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry.
Missile strike kills Palestinian civilian in Abu Dhabi
Meanwile, a Palestinian civilian was killed on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi on Monday when a missile struck their car, authorities said.
The incident in the Al Bahia area comes as Iran presses on with strikes on countries in the Gulf following US-Israeli attacks.
"Authorities in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi responded to an incident in the Al Bahia area involving a missile strike on a civilian vehicle, which resulted in the death of one Palestinian national," the official Abu Dhabi Media Office said in a statement.
