Israeli Strike on Iran's Fordow Nuclear Site Triggers 2.5-Magnitude Quake

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As the Israel-Iran conflict entered its fourth consecutive day on Monday, June 16, 2025, a loud explosion was heard near the Fordow nuclear facility, accompanied by ground tremors that triggered a minor earthquake measuring 2.5 on the Richter scale.

As reported by News18, a video uploaded by Iran International English showed a large explosion about 20 kilometers from Qom.

Prior to this, the head of the UN atomic agency, Rafael Grossi, confirmed that Israel attacked the Fordow enrichment plant on Friday, the first day of the conflict, indicating that Israel had targeted three main nuclear program sites in Iran, according to The Wall Street Journal.

"At present, the Iranian authorities are informing us of attacks on two other facilities, namely the Fordow fuel enrichment plant and at Isfahan," said IAEA nuclear watchdog chief Rafael Grossi to the UN Security Council.

In last week's attack, Israel targeted the Natanz enrichment site, while a separate attack hit the Isfahan Nuclear Facility and Uranium Conversion Center.

According to Kan News Israel, satellite images revealed significant damage at Iran's Natanz enrichment facility, including its power station.

Israel and Iran exchanged missile fire on Sunday night. Sirens were heard in Jerusalem, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said. Missiles were also seen in the sky over Tel Aviv, forcing people to take cover. Israel's air defense system intercepted some of the projectiles fired by Iran.

Iran's attack on Tel Aviv and Haifa was "the most intense since the start of the war," Al Arabiya reported, citing Israeli media. Around 100 missiles were launched from Iran into Israel, according to this morning's report.

Iran's ballistic missiles hit the Haifa oil refinery in Israel. According to a post by RT International, a large fire broke out in Haifa after the attack. RT also quoted an unnamed Israeli official as saying that four people were injured in the attack.

This occurred a day after Israel's attack targeted Iran's main energy and nuclear infrastructure, marking a sharp escalation in the ongoing conflict between the two countries.
