TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Water Resources Agency is gearing up for potential floods due to extreme weather. This is being done through the preparation of stationary and mobile pumps, speeding up the dredging of rivers, canals, reservoirs, and lakes, as well as the operation of the polder system.

The head of Jakarta's Water Resources Agency, Ika Agustin Ningrum, said the agency is ensuring that all flood control equipment can function optimally before, during, and after heavy rainfall. "Flood handling must be quick and precise, as floods can occur within hours," she said in an official statement quoted on Friday, March 27, 2026.

As of mid-March 2026, the Water Resources Agency has deployed 668 units of stationary pumps spread across 243 locations, with 537 units of mobile pumps available to reach flooded areas unreached by the stationary pumps. The agency also makes sure water gates across several rivers and canals are able to function optimally before and during floods.

To increase drainage capacity, the agency is accelerating the dredging of water bodies. Since January 2, 2026, the dredging volume in five administrative areas has reached 123,393 cubic meters. Dredging is carried out using 260 excavators and 465 dump trucks.

Throughout 2025, the total dredging volume reached 919,173 cubic meters.

The Jakarta agency also deploys the Blue Troop, a task force responsible for monitoring field conditions, supporting pump operations, and ensuring swift handling of flooded regions. The task force will also conduct routine patrol to anticipate floods.

These measures are taken because several areas in Jakarta are still vulnerable to flooding during heavy rainfall, especially in West Jakarta, South Jakarta, and East Jakarta.

One such incident occurred recently, with 46 neighborhoods (RT) affected by floods in East Jakarta on Sunday, March 22, 2026. The floods occurred after heavy rains drenched the region overnight, triggering overflows in several rivers, such as Kali Cipinang, Kali Cilangkap, and Kali Sunter.
