M5.2 Earthquake and Aftershocks Strike Aceh's Sabang

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded a series of earthquakes in Sabang City, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, this afternoon, Friday, July 4, 2025. The quakes were centered at sea.

The agency's data revealed that the main quake occurred at 12:33 p.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB) with a magnitude of 5.2, updated from an initial report of 5.0.

The quake's epicenter was located at sea, 45 kilometers northwest of Sabang City, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers. "It is a shallow earthquake caused by the Sumatra Segment of the North Seulimeum Fault," said Daryono, Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis at BMKG, in a statement released after the event.

The tremor was felt in Sabang, Banda Aceh, and Aceh Besar at the III MMI scale. At this intensity, tremors are noticeable indoors, similar to the sensation of a truck passing by. The tremors also reached Sigli and Pidie but were felt more weakly (II MMI).

In his statement, Daryono confirmed that BMKG had not received any reports of damage caused by the earthquake. He also added, "Tsunami modeling results with a source of tectonic earthquakes indicate that this earthquake does not have the potential to trigger a tsunami."

Aftershocks and Prior Tremors

As of 1:30 p.m., BMKG monitoring showed eight aftershock activities. Among these, tremors were felt at 12:39 p.m. WIB (M4.5) and at 1:19 p.m. (M4.6). These specific aftershocks were felt in Sabang at the II MMI scale.

Prior to this series of earthquakes in Sabang, BMKG also recorded a 4.0-magnitude earthquake in Malili, East Luwu, South Sulawesi. That earthquake, which occurred at 11:39 a.m. WIB, was centered on land, 16 kilometers southeast of East Luwu. With a shallow depth of only two kilometers, the earthquake was felt at the III-IV MMI scale, capable of making doors and windows rattle.
