
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to visit Indonesia on 28-29 July 2025. Anwar will meet with President Prabowo Subianto for the 13th annual consultation between Indonesia and Malaysia.
According to a statement from the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Wisma Putra), the consultation is an opportunity to enhance the strategic relationship between the two countries. Wisma Putra stated, as quoted from its official website on Sunday, 27 July 2025, "And to explore new areas of cooperation in facing current regional and global challenges."
Wisma stated that this annual consultation is the highest bilateral mechanism between Indonesia and Malaysia. The agenda, which was first held in 2006 alternately between the two countries, aims to strengthen cooperation in various fields, including trade and industry, defense and security, interconnection, food security, and education.
"Leaders are also expected to exchange views on regional and global issues that are of mutual concern," said Wisma.
In addition to attending the annual consultation, Prabowo and Anwar will witness the exchange of four memoranda of understanding (MoU) in the areas of land border cooperation, health cooperation, as well as information and communication technology.
During his two-day agenda, Anwar will visit the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta to meet with the Secretary-General of ASEAN, Kao Kim Hourn, at the invitation of the Secretary-General. Anwar will reaffirm Malaysia's commitment to regional integration and the development of the ASEAN Community.
During his visit to Indonesia, Anwar will be accompanied by Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan; Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution; Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry Tengku Zafrul Aziz; and Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.
On Friday, 27 June 2025, Prabowo received the official visit of Anwar Ibrahim at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta. During the meeting, Prabowo and Anwar discussed bilateral issues, ASEAN regional matters, and global issues.
"We exchanged views and it turns out that in many aspects, almost everything, the views of Indonesia and Malaysia are the same," said Prabowo in a joint press conference.
One of the crucial issues discussed was the Ambalat region. Prabowo and Anwar agreed to approach it through a joint economic cooperation scheme. "For example, the Ambalat issue, we agreed that while we are resolving legal issues, we want to start with economic cooperation, which we call Joint Development. Whatever we find in the sea, we will jointly exploit it," said Prabowo.
