TEMPO.CO, Bandung - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning for potential tidal floods in the southern coastal regions of West Java. The floods are projected to hit the region due to the new moon phase from May 25 to 31, as well as the perigee phenomenon—when the moon is at its closest distance to the earth.
According to the West Java Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), coastal floods are likely to hit Pelabuhan Ratu, Ciracap, and Ujung Genteng in the Sukabumi Regency.
Residents in the Pameungpeuk and Cikelet areas in Garut Regency are also urged to anticipate the impact of tidal flooding. The same goes for residents in Cipatujah and Cikalong in the Tasikmalaya Regency, as well as Kalipucang and Pangandaran in the Pangandaran Regency.
Maximum sea level rise is expected to occur from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. local time, with the new moon phase and perigee condition affecting wave heights in the Indian Ocean south of West Java until May 27.
As stated in BMKG's regular forecast, high waves from 2.5 to 4 meters will be present in the Indian Ocean west of Aceh, the Mentawai Islands, and Lampung.
Sailors are warned of strong winds in the waters of southern Central Java, Yogyakarta, East Java, Bali, and East Nusa Tenggara.
The wind in Indonesia's north moves southwestward at a speed of about 6-25 knots, the same speed as those in southern parts of Indonesia, which move southeastward.
"The highest wind speed is observed in the western Indian Ocean off Aceh, as well as the southern Indian Ocean off Banten to East Nusa Tenggara," according to BMKG's official statement.
