TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2026, based in Britain, have officially been released, evaluating 1,500 world-class higher education institutions across 106 countries and territories. As expected, Singapore has once again secured its position among global academic powerhouses, reaffirming its unwavering commitment to excellence.
This year's ranking marks a significant milestone for the city-state, with two of Singapore's best universities securing outstanding positions. The National University of Singapore (NUS) remains firmly in 8th place with an impressive overall score of 95.9. Equally noteworthy, Nanyang Technological University or NTU Singapore has climbed three spots to reach 12th place, earning a score of 93.7, a substantial gain from its previous 88.4.
The QS rankings are determined by nine key indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-student ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty ratio, international student ratio, international research network, employment outcomes, and sustainability. Among these, academic reputation (30%), citations per faculty (20%), and employer reputation (15%) carry the most weight.
NUS saw an upward movement in academic reputation, climbing one spot, and an impressive 16-spot jump in employer reputation. However, it experienced a slight decline of three positions in the citations per faculty indicator. NTU Singapore, on the other hand, made significant strides in employer reputation, surging from 92nd to 67th place.
As quoted by The Straits Times, NTU President Ho Teck Hua attributed the university's rise to strategic developments, including the launch of the College of Computing and Data Science and the Honours College. These initiatives reportedly aim to better equip students to harness technology in a rapidly evolving world.
QS Senior Vice President Ben Sowter added, "NTU Singapore’s continued rise in the global rankings reflects its remarkable ability to combine academic excellence with cutting-edge research and a strong commitment to innovation."
"The university stands out for its future-oriented approach, from pioneering work in sustainability and smart technologies to its deep collaborations with industry and government. NTU is not only contributing to Singapore’s knowledge economy but is helping shape solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges," he added.
With NUS and NTU standing shoulder to shoulder with world-class institutions like MIT, Oxford, and ETH Zurich, Singapore proudly joins the ranks of a select few Asian nations at the top. This achievement undoubtedly reflects the city-state's bold and forward-thinking investment in education, preparing students for global leadership and driving research that addresses real-world issues.
