NU Chair Says Prabowo's Palestine Remarks Reflect Organization's Stance

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Chairperson of the Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board, Yahya Cholil Staquf, believes that President Prabowo Subianto has been a consistent champion of Palestinian independence.

According to him, the Head of State's statement that the Indonesian government would establish diplomatic relations with Israel if it recognizes Palestine's independence is in line with Indonesia's foreign policy. This political stance involves supporting nations in their struggle for independence.

"This is consistent with Indonesia's policy of supporting a two-state solution from the beginning," said Yahya Staquf in an official statement on Saturday, May 31, 2025.

Yahya stated that this political stance is in line with NU's struggle, which stands with other countries in fighting for the independence of the Palestinian people. However, he emphasized the need for a joint affirmation of support for Palestine.

"This affirmation can be achieved through international consolidation within legitimate multilateral platforms to push for a decisive political process towards the realization of the two-state solution," he said.

Yahya highlighted that the current top priority is to save the lives of thousands of children, women, and vulnerable people from the threat of violence due to the war. This priority can be addressed by requiring the international community to adhere to the existing consensus.

Previously, President Prabowo Subianto stated that Indonesia would recognize Israel if it acknowledged Palestine as a sovereign state. This statement was made when Prabowo received a visit from French President Emmanuel Macron at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on May 28, 2025.

Before Macron, Prabowo also praised France for supporting the independence of Palestine. "France will continue to push for an immediate end to armed activities in Gaza," the Head of State said.
