Online Ojek Drivers to Protest Again at Palace Over Unmet Demands

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Garda Indonesia, an online motorcycle taxi drivers association, alongside various alliances of online motorcycle taxi (online ojek or ojol) organizations and communities across Greater Jakarta or Jabodetabek, plans to hold another demonstration at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta in the near future.

Yudha Al Janata, Head of Public Relations for Garda Indonesia, said that the protest will resume because the government has not yet responded to demands made by online motorcycle taxi drivers during their May 20 demonstration.

"Up to now, the Indonesian Minister of Transportation remains silent and has not made a decision regarding our demands from the May 20, 2025, action," Yudha said in a written statement on Sunday, June 22, 2025. "Therefore, we will carry out the 'Ojol Revolution Siege of the Presidential Palace of the Republic of Indonesia' action."

Yudha mentioned that approximately 50,000 two-wheeled and four-wheeled online motorcycle taxi drivers from various regions will participate, entering Jakarta in waves. While the exact date is still being coordinated with allied organizations, the demonstration will focus on the Merdeka Palace. Yudha confirmed the action would take place "at the earliest on Monday, July 21, 2025, and at the latest in August 2025."

Among the demands the online motorcycle taxi association will present are: urging President Prabowo Subianto to issue a Government Regulation in Lieu of Law on Online Transportation, setting the maximum application fee cut at 10 percent, and implementing discretion in food ordering and package delivery tariffs.

The association also demands a government audit of the 5 percent cut from drivers' earnings that they claim has been unilaterally taken by application providers without transparency. Furthermore, they seek a government mandate requiring application companies to eliminate promotional programs and driver grouping schemes.

In addition to the street protest, Yudha said that the demonstration will be accompanied by a mass application shutdown action simultaneously across Indonesia, aiming to temporarily disable online-based transportation services.

"We hope that President Prabowo will prove to the combined two-wheeled and four-wheeled online drivers that it is indeed true and concrete that the Indonesian President is pro-people, not pro-business interests," Yudha added.
