Police: More Than Four People May Be Behind Attack on Andrie Yunus

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Metropolitan Police said investigators are considering the possibility that more than four people were involved in the acid attack on Andrie Yunus, deputy coordinator of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS).

Earlier, the police had said there were four suspected perpetrators.

“Based on the investigation, we do not rule out the possibility that the number of perpetrators may be more than four, as initially communicated,” said Sr. Comr. Iman Imanuddin, Director of General Crime Investigation atJakarta Metropolitan Police, during a press conference at police headquarters in South Jakarta on Wednesday, March 18, 2026.

At a previous press conference on Monday, March 16, Iman said the four suspects were riding on two motorcycles, with two people on each bike.

He said the attackers had been following the victim since he left the office of the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI). The suspects also allegedly tailed him when he stopped to refuel at the Cikini Raya gas station at around 11:35 PM.

“The victim did not go directly to the crime scene but stopped first at the Cikini Raya gas station, and the perpetrators followed him,” Iman said.

According to police, four suspects then waited for Andrie near KFC Cikini, located about one building away from the gas station.

“Four suspected perpetrators on two motorcycles were seen waiting for the victim in front of KFC Cikini,” Iman said.

The suspects later followed Andrie as he headed toward Diponegoro Street, before the attack took place at the intersection of Salemba I Street and Talang Street in Central Jakarta.

“We obtained CCTV footage with clear images, which has greatly assisted the investigation,” Iman said.

After the attack, the suspects allegedly fled in different directions. One motorcycle reportedly drove against traffic on Salemba Street toward Senen, then continued via Kramat Raya, Tugu Tani, and Gondangdia Station before heading to South Jakarta.

The second motorcycle allegedly continued toward Pramuka Sari II Street and then to Matraman. “From Matraman, CCTV footage tracked it toward the Jatinegara area and later to DI Panjaitan Street in East Jakarta,” Iman said.

Andrie Yunus was attacked with acid by unidentified assailants in the Salemba area of Central Jakarta on the night of Thursday, March 12, 2026. KontraS Coordinator Dimas Bagus Arya said Andrie suffered burns covering 24 percent of his body.

He is being treated by six specialists, including doctors in ophthalmology, ENT, neurology, orthopedics, thoracic care, internal medicine, and dermatology.
