TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Legal, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correctional Affairs Yusril Ihza Mahendra suggested that President Prabowo Subianto may bring up the case of Juliana Marins in a meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva during the BRICS High-Level Conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, scheduled for July 6–7, 2025.

Juliana, a Brazilian hiker, died on Mount Rinjani, West Nusa Tenggara. Her case has recently drawn significant public attention.

"There might be a discussion during the bilateral talks between President Prabowo and the Brazilian President," Yusril said at the Coordinating Ministry for Legal Affairs office in Jakarta on Friday, July 4, 2025.

Yusril stated that the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs remains in close coordination with the Indonesian Ambassador in Brazil to monitor developments in the case.

He also expressed hope that the incident would not affect Indonesia’s strong bilateral relations with Brazil, particularly since both countries are active members of BRICS.

Yusril emphasized that the Indonesian government has taken Juliana’s case seriously. Efforts to locate and rescue her included deploying a search and rescue team and volunteers. However, due to the difficult terrain of Mount Rinjani, the evacuation took longer than expected and did not meet the hopes of Juliana’s family.

He added that according to the autopsy results, Juliana had died 15 to 30 minutes after the fall. As a result, the chances of saving her life, even with a quicker response, were minimal.

"So, no matter how quickly the victim is found after falling from a 600-meter height with severe bone fractures, medically speaking, the chances of survival are already very slim," he said.

So far, the Indonesian government has not received any official diplomatic communication from Brazil regarding the incident. It has only received a statement from Brazil’s Federal Public Defender’s Office (DPU).

Yusril explained that the DPU does not hold official authority, as it is an independent human rights institution similar to Indonesia’s National Human Rights Commission. He also noted that President Prabowo does not have plans to meet with the DPU.

As for a possible meeting with Juliana’s family, Yusril said there has been no request for such a meeting.

"It's a private matter," he said.

Earlier, the DPU had expressed the possibility of legal action if the autopsy revealed negligence that contributed to Juliana’s death. She fell while hiking on June 21 and was evacuated four days later, with the process delayed by several obstacles.
