Prabowo Reaffirms Indonesia's Non-Aligned Stance on US-Iran War

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto explained Indonesia's stance on the war between the United States and Israel against Iran. Prabowo said Indonesia is on the right track by not taking sides with either warring faction in the Middle East.

He stated that the current war is happening in almost all regions of the world, especially in the Middle East. "Some time ago, we realized there was a major war in Europe, in Ukraine. Now, almost the entire Middle East is affected," said the Chair of the Gerindra Party during his visit to Aceh Province on Monday, March 9, 2026, as reported by the Presidential Secretariat.

According to Prabowo, the escalation of the war between the U.S. and Israel against Iran has affected almost the entire Middle East region. Despite Indonesia being geographically far from that area, Prabowo said the impact is still felt in the country.

"Our earth has truly become small; what happens in one region will affect other regions," he said.

He said Indonesia has taken the right stance by not favoring anyone. "Our nation and country are on the right track. We are on the path of non-alignment. We always remain on the path of active non-bloc," he said.

Prabowo said Indonesia respects all countries. "We do not want to join any blocs. We respect all powers. We respect all countries. That is Indonesia," he stated.

The situation in the Middle East has intensified after the U.S. and Israeli military attacked Iran on February 28, 2026. The attack resulted in the deaths of several top Iranian leaders, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and some of his family members. Iran retaliated by attacking Israel and U.S. facilities in the Middle East.

In response to the war, President Prabowo offered to serve as a mediator to ease tensions in the Middle East. "This is certainly consistent with the principle of active non-alignment to continue to push for a peaceful resolution and prevent the spread of conflict," said the Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang at a press conference in Jakarta on Friday, March 6, 2026.
