Prabowo Sends Condolence Letter to Iran on Khamenei's Death

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesian president Prabowo Subianto has expressed his condolences over the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in joint US-Israeli airstrikes.

Prabowo conveyed his sympathies in a letter addressed to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. The letter was delivered by Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Sugiono to Iran’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi.

Sugiono met Boroujerdi at the Foreign Ministry in Jakarta on Wednesday, March 4, 2026. In a post on his Instagram account, @menluri, Sugiono said he had formally conveyed the president’s message.

“I also relayed a letter from President Prabowo to President Masoud Pezeshkian, expressing deep condolences for the passing of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran,” Sugiono wrote.

During the meeting, the two officials discussed the latest developments in the Middle East. Sugiono emphasized the importance of respecting international law and upholding the United Nations Charter amid rising tensions in the region.

He also underscored the need for de-escalation in the conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.

“As well as the necessity of de-escalation through diplomacy,” he added.

Khamenei was killed in airstrikes on Tehran on Saturday, February 28, 2026, local time. Iranian state-linked news agency Fars confirmed his death after US President Donald Trump announced it on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, March 1.

According to Fars, several members of Khamenei’s family were also killed in the attack. Al Arabiya, citing sources close to the Supreme Leader’s family, reported that a daughter, a son-in-law, a grandson, and a granddaughter-in-law were among the victims.

Khamenei, 86, had served as Iran’s Supreme Leader since 1989, succeeding Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic. As Supreme Leader, he held ultimate authority over Iran’s political, military, and religious institutions, shaping both domestic policy and foreign relations.

The position of Supreme Leader was established after Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution and is enshrined in the country’s constitution, granting a senior cleric authority above the president and parliament.
