Prabowo Subianto Inaugurates the First Production of Forel and Terubuk Oil Fields

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto inaugurated the first production from the Forel and Terubuk oil fields via a video conference from the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Friday, May 16, 2025. Both oil field projects are located in Natuna, Riau Islands.

"I, Prabowo Subianto, President of the Republic of Indonesia, inaugurate the first production of the Forel and Terubuk oil fields. Thank you, keep fighting, [and] once again, merdeka," he said from the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta, as broadcasted on the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel on Friday, May 16, 2025.

The Head of State emphasized that the inauguration of the Forel and Terubuk oil fields marks the first achievement in the energy and mineral resources sector under his new administration. He also highlighted its importance in the country's efforts to achieve national energy self-sufficiency. "Both projects are an important and historic milestone and our joint effort to achieve national energy self-sufficiency," he said.

The Chair of the Gerindra Party asserted that national energy self-sufficiency is crucial for Indonesia's independence. Achieving this goal would enable the government to save tens of billions of US dollars. "Hundreds of trillions of rupiah would not need to leave Indonesia. The Indonesian economy will be stronger, with more funds available for the people," Prabowo explained.

According to Prabowo, achieving energy self-sufficiency is similar to achieving food self-sufficiency. A nation that can achieve both food and energy self-sufficiency becomes very strong. "That nation cannot be disturbed by other nations; that nation will be resilient in any situation," he stated.

Prabowo also highlighted that the inauguration of these two projects demonstrates the ability of Indonesian engineers to master oil and gas industry technology, particularly with nearly 100 percent domestic component utilization in the project. "In this era, mastering technology, especially in the economic sector, is the future of a nation," he emphasized.

The Forel and Terubuk fields are part of the South Natuna Sea Block B Working Area (WK), developed by Medco E&P Natuna Block B Ltd (an affiliate of PT Medco Energi Internasional Tbk) with a 40 percent participating interest. Medco Daya Abadi Lestari holds 35 percent, and Prime Energy holds 25 percent. The investment for this project reached approximately US$600 million and created 2,300 jobs during the construction phase.

Production from these two fields is expected to increase the oil supply by 20,000 barrels per day and the gas supply by 60 million cubic meters, equivalent to an additional 30,000 barrels of oil per day.

According to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources website, the Forel field successfully began production on May 12, 2025. This project includes the construction of the Marlin Natuna Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) rental, the development of two platforms, and seven wells. This FPSO will support oil production from the Forel project, initially producing 10,000 barrels per day with the potential to reach 13,500 barrels per day.

Djoko Siswanto, Head of the Special Task Force for Upstream Oil and Gas Business Activities (SKK Migas), emphasized that the successful start of production from these two fields shows Indonesia's commitment to building a healthy and competitive energy investment environment.

"The commencement of production from the Forel and Terubuk Fields is an important milestone that reflects the strong collaboration between the government and Medco E&P in maintaining the stability of the national energy supply. We also appreciate the company’s commitment to high standards of occupational safety, health, and environmental protection," Djoko stated in a release from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources on Friday, May 16, 2025.
