PSSI Tells Fans Not to Blame Players After Indonesia's AFF Cup Exit

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Yunus Nusi, Secretary General of the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI), has asked the public not to subject the Indonesian national team players and coaches to vitriol after the "Garuda" squad failed to advance to the 2026 AFF Cup semifinals.

"We must continue to appreciate our national team for their efforts. Feel free to criticize PSSI or the Chairman; we accept that. However, the most important thing is not to vilify the players and coaches. They are our assets for the future," Yunus said in a statement monitored in Jakarta on Sunday.

Indonesia drew 1-1 against Singapore in their final Group B match at Jalan Besar Stadium, Singapore, on Friday (August 7), finishing third and causing John Herdman's squad to miss out on the semifinals.

Yunus Nusi acknowledged the public's disappointment regarding the national team's failure to achieve a satisfactory result in the competition.

"Regarding the AFF Cup results, PSSI offers its deepest apologies to the entire Indonesian football community for not delivering a perfectly satisfactory outcome," he said.

Yunus emphasized that the players and coaches still deserve appreciation for their efforts throughout the tournament.

He noted that the Indonesian national team players still have long careers ahead of them and are expected to achieve greater success in the future.

Therefore, public support remains crucial for the development of the Garuda squad.

"There is still great hope that these young men can elevate our football to new heights of achievement," he said.

Meanwhile, PSSI confirmed that the failure in the 2026 AFF Cup would be subject to a comprehensive evaluation.

Yunus stated that evaluation is a routine process for PSSI, carried out whether the national team achieves success or faces disappointing results.

The evaluation involves the PSSI Chair, the National Team Body (BTN), the Executive Committee (Exco), and the coaching staff.
