Public Transport Use During Indonesia's Eid Exodus Rises 9.23%

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation recorded a rise in the number of mudik travelers using public transportation during the 2026 Eid al-Fitr homecoming exodus, with total passenger traffic surpassing 10 million in the eight days leading up to the holiday.

The ministry said 10,003,583 people traveled using mass transportation from H-8 to H-1 of Eid al-Fitr, referring to the period from eight days before to one day before the holiday.

“This figure marks a 9.23 percent increase compared to the same period during Eid al-Fitr in 2025, which recorded 9,158,315 passengers,” said Ernita Titis Dewi, head of the ministry’s Public Communication and Information Bureau, in a written statement on Monday, March 23, 2026.

Based on data from the Integrated Eid al-Fitr Transportation Center, Titis said railways accounted for the largest share of passengers, with 2,981,945 travelers, up 13.22 percent from the previous year.

Ferries came second, serving 2,482,303 passengers, a 14.78 percent increase year-on-year.

Air travel recorded 2,190,282 passengers, up 3.05 percent, while land transportation served 1,587,060 passengers, a 9.18 percent increase. Sea transportation recorded 761,993 passengers.

In addition to public transport usage, the ministry also noted increased private vehicle movement at several locations.

On H-1 of Eid al-Fitr, the number of vehicles exiting toll gates in Jakarta reached 117,016, while 66,210 vehicles entered the city.

“Overall, traffic at toll gates in the Greater Jakarta area reached 248,349 vehicles, while outside Greater Jakarta, there were 236,758 vehicles,” Titis said.

She added that on H-1 of Eid al-Fitr, March 20, 2026, the number of public transportation passengers departing reached 915,635.

Rail services carried the largest daily volume, with 302,823 passengers on intercity and regional routes. Air transportation served 207,261 passengers, covering both domestic and international flights.

Ferry services carried 189,804 passengers, followed by land transportation with 161,054 passengers, and sea transportation with 54,693 passengers.

The ministry also highlighted relatively high punctuality rates, or on-time performance (OTP), across several transport modes.

Intercity trains posted an OTP of 98.20 percent, while regional trains recorded 98.90 percent. Domestic flights reached 85.79 percent, while international flights posted 70.24 percent.

“For sea transportation, the punctuality rate reached 95.70 percent, ferry transportation recorded 63.19 percent, and land transportation 72.49 percent,” Titis said.
