TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing on Sunday, July 13, 2025. The meeting was held ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) foreign ministers' meeting in China.
As reported by The Jerusalem Post, the two high-ranking officials discussed various important issues, including relations with the United States and prospects for resolving the Ukraine conflict. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, "The parties also discussed relations with the United States and prospects for resolving the Ukrainian crisis."
International Forum Coordination
In an official statement, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also emphasized that the two countries agreed to strengthen close coordination on the global stage.
"The importance of strengthening close coordination between the two countries in the international arena, including in the United Nations and its Security Council, the SCO, BRICS, the G20 and APEC, was emphasized," the statement read.
Since February 2022, Russia and China have declared an "unbounded partnership." The statement was made when President Vladimir Putin visited Beijing, just days before Russia launched a massive invasion of Ukraine. Since then, the relationship between the two countries has grown closer, especially in the face of pressure from the West. Putin has repeatedly referred to China as an "ally." On the other hand, the United States views China as its main competitor in global geopolitics, while Russia is seen as the greatest threat from a sovereign state.
Support for North Korea
According to Channel News Asia (CNA), before arriving in Beijing, Lavrov first visited North Korea for a three-day diplomatic visit.
According to North Korean state media, KCNA, Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un expressed readiness to support Moscow. He expressed his willingness to support any Russian efforts to resolve the Ukraine crisis unconditionally.
"Kim Jong Un reaffirmed the DPRK is ready to unconditionally support and encourage all the measures taken by the Russian leadership as regards the tackling of the root cause of the Ukrainian crisis," wrote KCNA.
The meeting between Lavrov and Kim took place in Wonsan City. There, the two countries held their second strategic dialogue and agreed to strengthen cooperation based on the partnership agreement, including a joint defense pact signed last year.
North Korea is also said to have provided military assistance, including troops and weapons, to support Russia's military operations in Ukraine. This support is also promised to continue to grow as Moscow seeks to continue its offensive.
