TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Save the Children Indonesia will collaborate with CIS Timor, a humanitarian volunteer group, to deliver clean water assistance for children affected by the eruption of Mount Lewotobi.
Fadli Usman, the Acting Program and Operations Manager of Save the Children Indonesia, said this effort is aimed at ensuring the children affected by the eruption do not suffer health problems.
Fadli explained that clean water and health services are the basic rights of every child and family. "The risk of disease will rise if these needs are not immediately met, especially in children whose immune systems are more vulnerable," he said in a statement received by Tempo on Friday, July 11, 2025.
Besides fulfilling children's rights to access clean water and sanitation, Save the Children Indonesia, along with CIS Timor, also provides psychosocial support to help children feel safer and reduce trauma from disasters.
This effort is also reinforced by the provision of emergency education services to allow the learning process to continue, especially in one of the districts in East Flores, where around 505 students had to stop going to school due to volcanic ash.
Save the Children Indonesia, a global organization focused on fulfilling children's rights in the country, says it will strive to fulfill children's rights to live a healthy life, access education, and protection, both in daily life and in crisis situations. This is aimed at ensuring that children remain protected and have the opportunity to grow properly.
Mount Lewotobi erupted again on Monday, July 7, 2025, at 11:05 AM local time. Due to the continuous eruption, As many as 7,724 residents in East Flores and nearby districts are displaced by the continuous eruptions of Mount Lewotobi.
The volcanic ash has also spread to several villages in Sikka Regency, contaminating water sources and damaging sanitation facilities. CIS Timor and Save the Children Indonesia noted that at least two villages in the area are facing a clean water crisis.
"All water sources, including wells and springs, are contaminated with volcanic material and therefore cannot be used," said Ignatius Laumakiling, a CIS Timor staff member.
