TAUD Alleges 16 People Involved in Andrie Yunus' Acid Attack

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Advocacy Team for Democracy (TAUD) suspects that 16 people were involved in the acid attack on KontraS activist Andrie Yunus on March 12, 2026. The suspicion was based on Taud's internal findings by reviewing 37 surveillance camera recordings around the crime scene, according to TAUD representative Alghiffari Aqsa.

Alghiffari mentioned that TAUD actually suspected 19 people who were caught on surveillance cameras. But TAUD narrowed down the number of suspects to 16 based on their interconnected positions around the crime scene where the attack on Andrie took place.

"So we adjusted several CCTV footages and compared them, and it turns out that these people were coordinating, at the same location, and signaling to each other," he said during a hearing with House Commission III in Jakarta, on Tuesday, March 31, 2026.

TAUD comprises several non-governmental organizations that urge the government to unravel the chain of command behind the acid attack on the Deputy Coordinator of the Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence (Kontras), Andrie Yunus.

They include Kontras, the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI), the Jakarta Legal Aid Institute (LBH), LBH Pers, Amar Law Firm, Imparsial, Trend Asia, and Greenpeace Indonesia.

On March 12, the police only released two alleged perpetrators who executed the attack in a press conference on March 18.

Meanwhile, at the same time, the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) stated that they had detained four suspected perpetrators from the Strategic Intelligence Unit of the Military Intelligence Agency. The Jakarta Metro Police said they have transferred the case to the TNI Military Police Center.

Alghiffari said he was bewildered at the difference in the number of perpetrators released by the police and the military. He also highlighted the lack of transparency in the TNI's investigation, which has not yet released the identities of the suspected perpetrators.

"So there is a violation of the principle of equality before the law. If they are civilians, they are paraded in front of the media, in front of the public, as the perpetrators. Then we can confirm with witnesses or victims that these are the perpetrators," said Alghiffari.

He hoped that the investigation into this case would not end when the police transfer the handling to the TNI Military Police Center. Alghiffari emphasized that TAUD, along with the civil society coalition, is pushing for the formation of a joint fact-finding team (TGPF) to thoroughly and independently investigate this case.

TAUD views this acid attack as a planned intelligence operation against civilians, based on the mobility of the 16 people suspected of surveilling and tailing Andrie, carrying out the acid attack, and conditioning the field.

"(The investigation) should be re-evaluated and continued so that at the very least, the 16 people should be legally processed, along with the intellectual actors, financiers, or the people behind this intelligence operation," he said.
