TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Three powerful earthquakes, one with a magnitude of 7.4, were recorded off the Pacific region of Kamchatka, Russia, on Sunday, July 20, 2025.
A tsunami warning has been issued following the tremors, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The epicenter of the earthquake sequence on Sunday was about 140 kilometers east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the capital of the Kamchatka region.
According to the USGS website, the three quakes occurred in the same area off the coast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky within a span of 32 minutes.
Two earthquakes were recorded with magnitudes of 6.7 and 7.4. Less than 30 minutes earlier, a 5.0 magnitude tremor was also reported in the same area, according to the USGS monitor.
Initially, tsunami warnings were issued for Russia and the state of Hawaii in the United States, citing the United States National Tsunami Warning Center. The warning in Hawaii was later lifted by the same agency, as reported by Al Jazeera.
Three aftershocks were also recorded shortly thereafter, one with a magnitude of 6.6.
The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) also confirmed that at least one earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 was recorded off the east coast of the Kamchatka region on Sunday. The GFZ later updated it to 7.4.
The city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky houses a population of more than 163,152, according to the city's website.
The city is located in the Kamchatka region facing the Pacific Ocean, to the northeast of Japan and to the west of the U.S. state of Alaska, across the Bering Sea.
The Kamchatka Peninsula is the meeting point of the Pacific and North American tectonic plates, making it a seismic hot zone.
Since 1900, seven major earthquakes with magnitudes of 8.3 or higher have struck the region.
