United States President Donald Trump gives a thumbs-up as he walks across the South Lawn towards the White House, Washington, D.C., United States, February 22, 2025. As 2026 approaches, the issue of impeachment against Trump has resurfaced. Democratic and progressive members of Congress are pushing for such a move following the aggressive military action in Iran in February 2026 and the intervention in Venezuela, which they believe was carried out without Congressional approval. TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has expressed his desire to seize Iran’s oil. The statement was made on Sunday, March 29, in an interview with the Financial Times, as quoted by NBC News.

Reports on Monday also cited Trump as saying he could seize Iran’s oil and potentially target Kharg Island, the country’s main oil export hub.

To be honest with you, my favorite thing is to take the oil in Iran but some stupid people back in the U.S. say: ‘Why are you doing that?’ But they’re stupid people,” Trump said.

This statement came after Trump had previously avoided answering whether he had plans to take Iran’s oil.

In a previous interview, he only said, “ou look at Venezuela.People have thought about it, but it’s too soon to talk about that.”

Targeting Kharg Island

Trump also said that the United States has “many options,” including the possibility of taking over Kharg Island, a major Iranian oil export hub that accounts for more than 90 percent of the country’s oil exports, according to multiple reports.

Maybe we take Kharg Island, maybe we don’t. We have a lot of options,” Trump said. He added, “It would also mean we had to be there [in Kharg Island] for a while.”

The statement came amid an increased U.S. military presence in the Middle East. According to reports, thousands of additional troops have been deployed, including the arrival of the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli carrying around 3,500 personnel.

U.S. Claims on Negotiations with Iran

Trump also said that negotiations with Iran are ongoing. He said discussions are taking place both directly and indirectly.

We're ahead of schedule with Iran. We're weeks ahead of schedule...and we have a group, it's really a new regime. It's a new group of people — people that we've never dealt with before, that are acting very reasonable,” Trump said, as quoted by Anadolu.

He also expressed optimism about the possibility of a deal. “I see there will be a deal with Iran,” he said, adding that a deal could happen soon. Iran had previously rejected a 15-point proposal from the United States, while Pakistan was reported to be facilitating indirect talks between Washington and Tehran.

Trump also claimed that Iran had allowed 20 oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.

“And now, today, they gave us, as a tribute — I don't know, I can't define it exactly, but they gave us, I think out of a sign of respect, 20 boats of oil — big, big boats of oil — going through the Hormuz Strait, and that's taking place starting tomorrow morning,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One.
