TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Special Rapporteur of the UN on Violence against Women and Girls, Reem Alsalem, stated that Israel is using reproductive violence as a tool of genocide against the Palestinian people. Israel is reported to prevent births within the Palestinian population and forcibly change the demographic composition.
"Against Palestinian women, I believe Israel is committing ... reproductive violence as a tool of genocide with the aim of preventing birth in the Palestinian population and forcibly changing the demographic composition," Alsalem said in a press conference in Geneva on Thursday, June 26, 2025, as quoted by Sputnik-OANA.
Alsalem emphasized that Israel's actions are not just ordinary violations of the laws of war, but they already meet the definition of genocide under the UN Genocide Convention. "This action is carried out with the intention of destroying, overall or partially, a nation, ethnicity, race, or religion," she added.
On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched an attack on Israel. In response, Israel launched air strikes and ground operations in the Gaza Strip.
A ceasefire and hostage exchange took place starting on January 19. However, on March 18, Israel resumed its attacks, claiming that Hamas rejected the U.S. plan related to the release of hostages and the extension of the ceasefire, which ended on March 1.
Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip have killed more than 56,000 Palestinian residents and injured 132,000 others.
