
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The U-23 national team of Vietnam advances to the final of the 2025 AFF U-23 Cup after defeating the Philippines 2-1 in the semifinal match at the Main Stadium of Gelora Bung Karno, Jakarta, on Friday, July 25, 2025.
During the away match, Vietnam initially fell behind as the Philippines managed to score a goal in the 36th minute through Javier Mariona. Vietnam made the score even five minutes later thanks to Nguyen Dinh Bac. Vietnam secured the victory with a goal by Nguyen Xuan Bac in the 54th minute.
The match statistics showed that Vietnam dominated throughout the game with 56 percent ball possession. The squad, led by South Korean coach Kim Sang-sik, managed to take 16 shots at the Philippines' defense, three of which hit the target. The Philippines only managed to make a total of five shots, two of which were on target.
For Vietnam, reaching the U-23 Cup final marks their success in reaching the tournament's pinnacle for the third consecutive time since 2022. Vietnam also emerged victorious in 2022 and 2023, making them the country with the most trophies in the ASEAN U-23 football tournament.
Vietnam will face the winner of today's match between Thailand and Indonesia. The final match will be held on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at the Main Stadium of Gelora Bung Karno, Jakarta, starting at 8:00 p.m. Jakarta time.
If they encounter the hosting team, Indonesia, it will be their second meeting following their 2023 encounter at the U-23 Cup finals. Meanwhile, if Thailand wins today's match, Vietnam will have a repeat of the 2022 finals.
The Vietnam U-23 national team was the victor of both the 2022 and 2023 finals, each with a score of 0-1 against Thailand and 6-5 (0-0) against Indonesia through a penalty shootout.
Meanwhile, the Philippines will compete for third place in the U-23 Cup with the losing team between Indonesia and Thailand. This match will take place on Monday, July 28, 2025, at 8:00 p.m. at the Main Stadium of Gelora Bung Karno, Jakarta.
