Wimbledon Champions Ousted as Aldila Sutjiadi Stuns Mladenovic-Guo in Toronto

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian tennis player Aldila Sutjiadi and her partner, New Zealand's Erin Routliffe, pulled off an upset by eliminating the fourth seeds—and Wimbledon champions—Kristina Mladenovic and Hanyu Guo in the first round of the WTA 1000 National Bank Open in Toronto, Canada, on Saturday, WIB (Western Indonesian Time).

Aldila and Routliffe defeated the French-Chinese duo in a hard-fought match lasting two hours and three minutes, winning 6-3, 6-7(4), 10-5 to secure a spot in the Round of 16, according to the WTA.

Aldila and Routliffe started strong, immediately putting pressure on their opponents' serves. They clinched the first set 6-3 before Mladenovic and Guo mounted a comeback in the second set.

The contest remained tight, forcing a tiebreak after the score reached 6-6. Mladenovic and Guo took the lead, winning the tiebreak 7-4 to force a super tiebreak.

In the deciding set, Aldila and Routliffe played more consistently, maintaining their lead to close out the match with a 10-5 victory.

Match statistics showed that Aldila and Routliffe were more effective at capitalizing on opportunities. They converted five of seven break points, whereas Mladenovic and Guo managed to convert only three of 11 chances.

The Indonesian-New Zealand pair also played with greater accuracy, recording three aces and eight double faults, compared to their opponents, who recorded no aces and 10 double faults.

Overall, Aldila and Routliffe won 78 of the 151 points played, slightly edging out Mladenovic and Guo, who won 73 points.

This result extends the positive momentum for Aldila and Routliffe following their victory at the WTA 500 Mubadala Citi DC Open in Washington last week.

Aldila and Routliffe were unseeded in Toronto because the seedings were determined based on rankings held prior to their title win in Washington. In the Round of 16, Aldila and Routliffe will face the pair of Olivia Nicholls and Tereza Mihalikova, who defeated Cristina Bucsa and Eudice Chong in the first round with a score of 4-6, 7-5, 11-9 on Monday, August 10, 2026.
