2025 AFF U-23 Cup Results: Indonesia vs Malaysia Ends in Goalless Draw

6 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The match between the Indonesia U-23 national team and Malaysia in the third match of group A phase of the 2025 AFF U-23 Cup ended in a goalless draw. The match took place at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta on Monday, July 21, 2025.

The draw ensured Indonesia's emergence as the group A champion with seven points from three matches. Malaysia ranked third with four points, losing the battle to the Philippines, which secured the second position. The Philippines accumulated six points after a 2-0 victory over Brunei Darussalam.

Match Highlights

Gerald Vanenburg, Indonesia U-23 coach, made several rotations. He fielded goalkeeper Cahya Supriadi to replace Muhammad Ardiansyah, who played in the previous match. He would be guarded by a line of four defenders, Kadek Arel Priyatna, Kakang Rudianto, Alfharezzi Buffon, and Dont Tri Pamungkas.

In the midfield, three midfielders were deployed, Robi Darwis, Rayhan Hannan, and Toni Firmansyah. They would act as the suppliers to the front trio comprising Rahmat Arjuna, Victor Dethan, and Jens Raven.

In the Malaysian team, coach Mohd Nafuzi Bin Mohammad Zain made several changes with a 4-3-3 formation. Under the crossbar, he fielded Zulhilmi Bin Sharani. The lineup in the back remained unchanged from the match against Brunei. He deployed Ubaidullah Shamsul, Ahmad Asyar Shapri, Muhammad Aiman Nabil, and Muhammad Shafizan.

He maintained Haykal Danish, Muhammad Khalil, and Ziad Norhisham in the midfield line, where the three players supported the front trio of Fergus Tierney, Muhammad Yuslan, and Haqimi Azim.

Indonesia played aggressively from the beginning of the first half. Robi Darwis and Rayhan Hannan controlled the midfield despite struggling to penetrate Malaysia's penalty area. The presence of Victor Dethan made the Garuda squad's attacks more dominant from the left side of the Negeri Jiran defense.

Indonesia's first chance came in the 15th minute. Starting from the chaos from an inward throw-in by Robi, Rayhan Hannan got the loose ball. However, his volley was easily caught by the Malaysian keeper.

Malaysia played more defensively and waited for the Indonesian players to make mistakes before executing quick counterattacks. Malaysia's solid defense made it difficult for Indonesia to make the final pass.

In the first 25 minutes, Indonesia dominated possession with 68 percent compared to Malaysia's 32 percent. The Garuda squad also only had three chances, two of which were on target. Malaysia only had two goal attempts.

Throughout the first half, Malaysia successfully locked down Indonesia's midfield, forcing them to always attack from the wing. Indonesia's last ripe chance came through Dony Tri Pamungkas taking advantage of the chaos in Malaysia's penalty area in the 45+2 minute. However, his shot went wide. The score remained 0-0 until halftime.

Second Half

Gerald Vanenburg made changes after halftime. He brought in Ahmad Maulana and substituted Alfharezzi Buffon. However, the situation didn't change much. Despite dominating, Indonesia's attacking plays still mainly came from the wing.

Malaysia had their first chance in the 53rd minute with a free kick from Aliff Izwan. His shot was still able to be tipped over by Indonesian keeper, Cahya Supriadi. Maulana's role was seen in the 57th minute after his run ended with a cross into the opponent's penalty area. Jens Raven got a piece of the ball, but Malaysian keeper Zulhilmi still managed to parry it.

In the 58th minute, Malaysia had a chance. After executing a piercing move, Shafizan sent a cross. His shot was still aimed at the goalkeeper. In the 72nd minute, Robi Darwis had a chance. He shot from outside the penalty area. However, the shot went wide. The score remained 0-0 until the end of the match.
