TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The leaders of ASEAN and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) announced their steadfast support for a two-state solution in the Palestinian issue during the second ASEAN-GCC Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn revealed that the meeting focuses not only on economic aspects but also on political discussion, especially the situation in Palestine.
Kao Kim Hourn said on Wednesday, May 28, that the leaders now support a two-state solution for Palestine, as well as seeking "an end to violence and the release of all hostages."
This support demonstrates the solidarity of both regions towards a peaceful resolution of the long-standing conflict between Palestine and Israel. The leaders emphasized the importance of ending all forms of violence as a top priority.
The ASEAN-GCC Summit will now be held twice a year every two years, with alternating locations between the two regions. In 2023, the meeting took place both within and outside the regions, while this year it was centered in Malaysia as the host.
Kao Kim Hourn also mentioned the convening of the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit, which expands the dimension of trilateral cooperation in the region.
The importance of the Palestine issue in the regional diplomatic agenda is reflected in the separate statement specifically issued regarding the outcomes of the ASEAN-GCC Summit Meeting.
In addition to Palestine, the leaders also discussed various other regional political issues, including the evolving situation in the Middle East.
The explicit support of ASEAN-GCC for a two-state solution for Palestine marks the strengthening of the regional diplomacy's role in global issues. These two regional blocs are active in promoting the resolution of international conflicts through dialogue and peaceful diplomacy.
This joint commitment is expected to provide a positive momentum for peace efforts in the Middle East and strengthen the position of multilateral diplomacy in resolving protracted conflicts.
