Bosch Plans to Lay Off 1,100 Employees at Reutlingen Plant in Germany

5 hours ago 4

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bosch will conduct layoffs for 1,100 employees at its plant in Reutlingen, Germany, by 2029. As reported by the India Times, the layoffs are carried out as the company shifts its focus from electronic control unit production to semiconductor production.

Bosch layoffs are part of a large-scale restructuring plan to switch the focus from electronic control unit production to semiconductors. This move by Bosch affects 10% of the workforce at the site and follows previous layoffs related to automotive industry restructuring.

According to Bosch, increasing competition from other companies, such as China, and changing market dynamics are the reasons behind this decision. The German automotive component manufacturer explains that the European market has become non-competitive.

This workforce shift occurs amid declining sales and intensifying global competition as Chinese manufacturers rapidly enter high-tech sectors as part of the Made in China 2025 strategy. This trend is reshaping the German industry structure with significant pressure on the automotive, clean technology, and mechanical engineering sectors.

Bosch's long-term shift to semiconductor production not only signals a change in product strategy but also a change in labor needs, with highly skilled roles likely to replace traditional manufacturing jobs over time.

Executive Vice President of Semiconductor Operations, Dirk Kress, stated that the workforce reduction is necessary to ensure the future of the plant, despite being a difficult decision.

These layoffs mark another round of restructuring for Bosch, which announced layoffs for 8,000-10,000 positions in November 2023, citing deep transformation in the automotive sector. The company previously reduced the working hours of over 450 employees, lowering the weekly hours from 38-40 to 35 and reducing their pay.

According to the official Bosch website, the Bosch Group is a leading global technology and services supplier. As of December 31, 2024, the company employed approximately 418,000 people worldwide.

In 2024, the company recorded sales of 90.3 billion euros. The company's operations are divided into four business sectors: Mobility Solutions, Industrial Technology, Consumer Goods, and Energy and Building Technology. As a leading IoT provider, Bosch offers innovative solutions for smart homes, Industry 4.0, and connected mobility.

Through its business activities, Bosch envisions using technology to shape universal trends, including automation, electrification, digitization, connectivity, and sustainability. Bosch's broad diversification across various regions and industries strengthens its innovation and resilience.

The company leverages its proven expertise in sensor technology, software, and services to offer cross-domain solutions to customers from a single source. Additionally, Bosch uses its expertise in connectivity and artificial intelligence to develop user-friendly, sustainable products.
