TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Cannes Film Festival 2025 officially concluded on Saturday night, May 24, 2025, at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès in France. After running for twelve days, from May 13, the 78th edition of the festival determined the film It Was Just an Accident directed by Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi, as the winner of the highest honor, the Palme d'Or.
Highest Award for It Was Just an Accident
The film portrays the story of a workshop owner who is confronted by a man whom he believes to be his former torturer. Set in Tehran and themed around trauma and revenge, Jafar Panahi directed this film secretly amidst the ban on his artistic work by the Iranian government.
According to Entertainment Weekly report, this marks Panahi's first major victory after more than two decades of absence from Cannes due to the travel ban imposed by the Iranian government, which was lifted in 2023. "What's most important now is our country and the freedom of our country. Let's join forces. No-one should dare tell us what kind of clothes we should wear, what we should do, or what we should not do," said Panahi in his acceptance speech.
Grand Prix for Joachim Trier
The Grand Prix, the second-most prestigious award, was bagged by Sentimental Value, a family drama film directed by Norwegian-born Danish director, Joachim Trier. The film starred Elle Fanning, Stellan Skarsgard, and Renate Reinsve, who previously appeared in the film Trier's The Worst Person in the World (2022).
Subsequently, this year's Jury Prize was awarded to two films, Sirat, a travel film by filmmaker Oliver Laxe from Galicia, and Sound of Falling, an experimental film by German director Mascha Schilinski. Belgian filmmakers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne once again made it to the list of Cannes winners. They received the Best Screenplay Award for the film Young Mothers.
Since 1999, they have received various awards at Cannes, including two Palme d'Or for Rosetta and The Child, Grand Prix for The Kid With a Bike, and special recognition for Tori and Lokita. As reported by Variety, the closing night was briefly disrupted by a regional power outage, which caused interruptions to the film screenings. However, with backup generators, the event carried on at the Palais.
