TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The number of Palestinians killed in Gaza has gone past 54,000 people since Israel's genocide began on October 7, 2023. This information was shared by Gaza health authorities on Tuesday, as reported by Anadolu. As of Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at least 54,056 Palestinians have died.
Over the past 24 hours, 79 Palestinians have died and 163 others have been injured due to Israeli attacks in various parts of the Gaza Strip, health authorities stated in a press release. They added that these death toll figures do not include hospitals in the Northern Gaza Governorate due to the difficulty of reaching those areas.
Meanwhile, the 163 new injuries bring the total number of wounded to 123,129 since the Oct. 7 attacks, marking their 600th day on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.
Authorities noted that many of the deceased and injured remain trapped under the rubble of destroyed buildings or in the streets. This is due to ongoing hostilities and the lack of safe corridors, which continue to impede the efforts of ambulance crews and civil defense.
Since Israel resumed intensified attacks on March 18, at least 3,901 Palestinians have been killed and 11,088 others injured. This brings the overall Palestinian death toll in Gaza since the conflict began in October 2023 to 54,056, with a total of 123,129 injured.
The Gaza Strip is currently experiencing a dire humanitarian situation, exacerbated by deteriorating security conditions and ongoing military operations that hinder aid efforts and access to the affected population.
A ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, mediated by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States, was reached in January 2025. However, this agreement collapsed two months later. Israel's military operations resumed in the Gaza Strip after the first phase of the agreement expired, and a deal on the second stage or its extension was not reached, partly due to Israeli violations.
Last November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Furthermore, Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) concerning its military actions in the region, brought by South Africa.
