Governor Extends Visiting Hours at Five Jakarta Museums

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo has extended the operating hours for five museums. These museums will be open until 8:00 PM on weekends.

Mochamad Miftahulloh Tamary, the Head of the Jakarta Cultural Department, conveyed this information. He mentioned that the extended operating hours will take effect starting today, Sunday, May 18, 2025.

Miftahulloh hopes that this policy will encourage people to actively visit the museums. "And make them part of the urban lifestyle, conscious of culture and history," he said in a written statement.

The five museums that will remain open until evening are the Jakarta History Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts and Ceramics, the Wayang Museum, the Maritime Museum, and the Betawi Museum. These places will now operate from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM every Saturday and Sunday.

According to Miftahulloh, the Jakarta Provincial Government conducted a trial extension of museum operating hours on May 10-11, 2025. He claimed that thousands of visitors attended during the two days of the trial. "It shows a great interest in local history and culture," said Miftahulloh.

He sees the increase in visitors as proof that museums are not boring. "These are destinations that can be enjoyed by everyone, from families to communities," he said.

The Jakarta Provincial Government's policy includes extending the operating hours of several of its facilities. In addition to museums, Pramono also extended the operating hours for several parks and libraries in the capital.

On Friday, May 16, 2025, Pramono announced that five parks in Jakarta will operate 24 hours a day. These five parks are Lapangan Banteng Park and Menteng Park in Central Jakarta, Ayodya Park, Langsat Park, and Martha Tiahahu Literacy Park in South Jakarta. "This is our commitment to open more green spaces," said Pramono.

Meanwhile, the Jakarta Library and the H.B. Jassin Literary Documentation Center will operate until 10:00 PM daily. Pramono extended the library operating hours in Taman Ismail Marzuki, Cikini, Central Jakarta, from its previous closing time of 4:00 PM.
