Harry Potter TV Series: HBO Reveals Cast for Harry, Ron and Hermione

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coming to the screen on HBO’s Harry Potter TV series are the brilliant cast members for the leads of Harry, Ron, and Hermione. The open casting call for the trio has finally come to an end, after three newcomer British child actors left casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann gasping at their talent.

More than 30,000 actors auditioned; the beloved wizarding trio will be portrayed by Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, with Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger.

Showrunner and executive producer Francesca Gardiner, along with Mark Mylod, the director of multiple episodes and executive producer, expressed their excitement at having the three on the set.

“After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione and Ron. The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen. We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It’s been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there,” they said in a statement, as quoted from Variety on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.

And as much as the original films launched Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint to global fame, the TV series is poised to establish this new iconic trio with unmatched popularity, especially as all three are relatively newcomers. McLaughlin previously appeared in Grow, while Stanton played the title role in Matilda: The Musical on the West End from 2023 to 2024. For Stout, portraying Ron marks his first major role.

Joining the new Harry, Ron, and Hermione are John Lithgow taking on the role of Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch.

Behind the screen is J.K. Rowling, the primary rights holder of the Harry Potter intellectual property, serving as an executive producer on the series.

Although Rowling has previously drawn controversy for her inflammatory statements on transgender issues, HBO’s chief content officer, Casey Bloys, addressed the matter on The Town podcast, saying: “It’s pretty clear that those are her personal, political views. She’s entitled to them. Harry Potter is not secretly being infused with anything. And if you want to debate her, you can go on Twitter.”

Alongside Rowling—the richest author in the world—Francesca Gardiner joins as the series’ writer and executive producer. The production is a collaboration between HBO, Brontë Film and TV, and Warner Bros. Television. The Harry Potter TV series is described by HBO Max, the streaming service, as a 'faithful adaptation' of the books, “full of the fantastic detail, much-loved characters, and dramatic locations that Harry Potter fans have cherished for over 25 years.”

Set to launch in 2025, HBO’s Harry Potter TV series arrives nearly three decades after the release of the first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (known in the U.S. as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone), and 15 years since the final film, The Deathly Hallows – Part 2, concluded the saga in theaters.
