Health Minister Highlights Top Four Killer Diseases in Indonesia

5 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin has revealed the four diseases that cause the most deaths in Indonesian society. Among them, stroke claims the highest number of lives, with a death rate reaching 300,000 people annually.

Budi attributed one of the triggers for these diseases to the community's negligence in monitoring their own health. Consequently, he noted, even when the body shows certain signals, people often realize it too late.

"Late treatment and only realizing when it was already serious. My mother was like that too," Budi shared at a discussion forum on the Prabowo Era Health Vision in Jakarta, today, May 17, 2025.

Heart disease ranks as the second leading cause of death. Based on Health Ministry data, the mortality rate due to heart disease stands at 95.68 per 100,000 population. This condition is often linked to risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and unhealthy eating patterns.

Following stroke and heart disease, Budi explained that cancer and kidney disease occupy third and fourth place, respectively, as the most deadly illnesses. "These chronic diseases do not immediately cause someone to die but can kill them slowly," he said.

Budi elaborated that individuals suffering from kidney failure typically experience organ damage over 4-5 years. However, the disease's symptoms are often only felt when severe damage has already occurred.

Therefore, Budi urged the public to take advantage of the free health check up program to mitigate these alarming trends. He emphasized that by detecting diseases early, there is a greater chance of successful treatment and recovery.

Currently, 5 million people have undergone examinations through the Free Health Check program. Budi targets this flagship initiative of President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka to reach 40 million people by the end of 2025 and extend to 280 million people within the next five years.
