India Refuses to Bow to Trump, Hints at Buying Oil from Russia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - India is indicating that it will defy US President Donald Trump's threats and continue to purchase Russian oil. As quoted from Sky News, India, the world's third-largest importer of crude oil, is buying Russian oil at lower prices amid the drop in prices caused by the large-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

Historically, most of India's crude oil was bought from Middle Eastern countries. However, this changed after the invasion in February 2022. Western countries imposed sanctions on Russia to cut off the flow of money used by Moscow to fund the war, triggering an energy crisis.

On Friday, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs stated that its relationship with Russia is stable and time-tested. India warned against viewing it from the perspective of other countries.

Speaking at a weekly briefing, spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said India's energy procurement is based on supplies from the market and the global situation. Similar statements were also made by two other government sources.

"This is a long-term oil contract," said one source. "It's not easy to just stop purchasing it."

India is heavily dependent on oil imports, which supply 87 percent of its needs, according to the International Energy Agency. India ranks third as the world's largest oil importer after the United States and China.

Previously, US President Donald Trump threatened to impose a 25 percent tariff on goods from India and additional import taxes due to New Delhi's purchase of Russian oil. Trump pledged to end the war in Ukraine as a top priority.

However, recently, Trump has become frustrated with Russian President Vladimir Putin for failing to agree on a ceasefire in Ukraine. He called the ceasefire plan disappointing and threatened new economic sanctions against Russia if there is no progress on the ceasefire with Ukraine.

"I understand that India will no longer buy oil from Russia," Trump told reporters. "That's what I've heard. I don't know if it's true or not, but it's a good move. We'll see later," as quoted by Anadolu. Trump accused India of unfair trade practices as well as energy and weapon deals with Russia.
