TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, stated that the ongoing project to rewrite the national history under his ministry has a budget of Rp9 billion. He opined that this amount is not substantial for the development of the 11-volume historical manuscript.
"[We have] the budget, I forgot the exact figure, but it's not that much. If I'm not mistaken, the record states Rp9 billion," Fadli said at the Parliament Complex on Monday, May 26, 2025. He stopped short of elaborating further on the budget details.
Fadli stated that the progress of writing the manuscript, which began in January, has exceeded 50 percent. This project involves 113 writers, including academics, historians, and experts in archaeology, geography, and architecture, hailing from various regions across Indonesia, from Papua to Aceh. Additionally, the compilation of this book involves 20 manuscript editors and 3 general editors.
Fadli hopes that rewriting Indonesia's past is seen as important for putting together the story of the nation's journey. He stated that the book aims to help "reinvent Indonesian identity from an Indonesia-centric perspective as an independent and sovereign nation." According to him, this new history book will cover broad aspects of Indonesia's life, including politics, economy, society, and culture.
The Ministry of Culture plans to conduct a public review of the revised history manuscript. Fadli indicated that this public review would take place in June or July.
